Economic impact and trends in male cosmetic
and reconstructive surgery
Over the last 10 years, the once female-predominant practice of getting plastic surgery has become more acceptable and more common for men to consider and undergo. In the current economy, more middle-aged men are trying to get a foothold in a very competitive job market, often competing with younger applicants. Some light cosmetic surgery to give their faces and bodies a refreshed, youthful look can offer a competitive edge.
While it may sound superficial, physical appearance is an important aspect of the hiring process, and more and more people are starting to understand that investing in yourself is a vital part of getting a company to invest in you and your talents.
Popular cosmetic procedures for men include blepharoplasty, liposuction and neck lifts.
There also are some procedures for males that are exclusive to them—the treatment for gynecomastia is one of these. Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from a Greek phrase meaning “woman-like breasts.” Though the term may not be very well known, it is actually a very common condition, affecting an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men.
For men with gynecomastia, the breast glands can grow to an unusually large size, resulting in embarrassingly large breasts. Gynecomastia can occur for males in one or both breasts. A large number of gynecomastia cases emerge in boys undergoing bodily changes through puberty; a significant percentage of younger boys inflicted with gynecomastia eventually outgrow it. Some, however, will not be able to get rid of their enlarged breast glands, no matter how physically active they are.
Male breast reduction involves the surgical removal of excess fat, glandular tissue and skin surrounding the breast area through means of excision or liposuction. For men with unusually large areolas (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) a qualified plastic surgeon can also reduce the size of this area during breast-reduction surgery. For eligible candidates for this procedure, male breast reduction can result in a chest they can be proud of.
The doctors at Southeastern Plastic Surgery, Ben J. Kirbo, M.D. and Laurence Z. Rosenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S., provide some of the newest, most technologically advanced cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. In addition, the practice provides a full line of skin care services. Drs. Kirbo and Rosenberg are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Laser Hair Removal
Just in Time for Summer
Almost all of us have been troubled with unwanted hair on the face and body. Have you ever considered doing something about it? Those days of painful hair removal using tweezers and hot wax are over.
What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal offers a fast, less painful solution to removing unnecessary hair. The Southeastern Plastic Surgery hair removal procedures are tailored to each individual’s skin and hair type.
How does it work?
The laser treatment is administered by our highly professional and skilled staff members. A laser beam passes through the skin to the hair follicle where the intense heat damages the follicle so it inhibits growth.
What kind of results can I expect? Is it permanent?
The treatments work best on individuals with light skin and dark hair. It may take several laser treatments to stop all growth.
Call 850.219.2000 and learn how you can find a new alternative to hair removal and for specials on packages.
Are You Ready for a Mommy Makeover?

Join other Tallahassee area mothers as Southeastern Plastic Surgery physicians discuss some of the options to help restore your body to its pre-pregnancy look.
Breast augmentation to return the breasts to pre-postpartum changes is a procedure many women ponder. Many women experience stretching and less breast tissue in their breasts so augmentation is a natural consideration. Liposuction and tummy tucks also appear high on the list for recent moms.
And sometimes a relaxing facial or skin care appointment can go a long way to rejuvenating you. Join our Hot Topics discussion on, April 9th when we discuss Post-Baby Body Rejuvenation.

Southeastern Plastic Surgery announces the Skin Scope Analyzer.
The changing colors and shorter days are reminders that the summer sun is now gone and fall is upon us. The moist air that left your skin feeling soft and supple in the warmer months is now turning cool and dry. In turn, much like the leaves outside, the skin’s surface begins to tighten and develop a more brittle texture, which can make even the most youthful face look weathered.
The SPA at Southeastern Plastic Surgery in Tallahassee has a new and exciting method of skin analysis. The Skin Scope Analyzer, developed by Hansen Medical System, allows for licensed medical aestheticians at The SPA to provide the most advanced skin analysis. This new generation of technology uses advanced black light technologies facial topography that fluoresce in a unique way highlighting the very different types of skin found on everyone's face.
Our trained aestheticians will view your face through a window and interpret what is being seen. A skin analysis is important for the early detection of sun damage and wrinkles.
The Skin Scope Analyzer more accurately aids in the determination of an individualized treatment. Armed with a customized skin care program and tips from our medical spa skin care experts, you’ll have glowing, supple skin through the fall.
State-of-the-art hair restoration micro-technology for men and women is here.
Today one out of five women and two out of every three men will suffer some degree of hair loss. While heredity plays a large role in contributing to hair loss. Illness or hormonal changes can also cause hair loss. Some of the illnesses contributing to hair loss are polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid disorders and some autoimmune disorders.
Hair replacement options have improved substantially and Dr. Laurence Z. Rosenberg, M.D., board-certified plastic surgeon with Southeastern Plastic Surgery has been helping meet the hair restoration needs of many women and men.
"Modern hair restoration techniques transfers hair from areas with dense growth to areas without hair,” he said. "This results in a natural looking, permanent solution to hair loss and not a patchy appearance like some of the old techniques."
There are a variety of hair replacement techniques that are available, although hair replacement surgery cannot help those who have total baldness. Candidates for hair replacement must have a healthy growth of hair on the sides or back of the head.
Hair thinning and hair loss can occur at any age and to learn if you are a good candidate for hair replacement, please call Southeastern Plastic Surgery.
back to topPulsed Light Hair Removal Technology
Just In Time For Bathing Suit Season
Southeastern Plastic Surgery continues to provide the most up-to-date technology by offering a less invasive and more efficient treatment for permanent hair removal.
The new pulsed-light system works by emitting pulses of intense lamplight into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair.
Traditional waxing and threading treatments essentially rip the hair from the skin and can be very painful. The new pulsed light treatments can be significantly more comfortable.
This new technology removes hair up to 10 times faster than laser treatments. As a result, pulsed light hair removal can fit even the busiest person’s schedule. Any area, except around the eyes can be treated including underarms, legs, back, bikini line, face, neck and other areas can be treated. Most areas can be treated in less than 30 minutes, and smaller areas, such as the underarms; upper lip or bikini line can be treated in even less time. In addition, since the pulses of light penetrate the skin, you do not need to let your hair grow out before you are treated. With pulsed light treatments, you can remain virtually hair-free all the time.
Southeastern Plastic Surgery provides some of the newest, most technologically advanced cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. In addition, the practice provides a full line of skin care services.
back to topNow you can grow longer, fuller eyelashes!
Southeastern Plastic Surgery is pleased to introduce LATISSE™ (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03%, the first and only prescription treatment approved by the FDA for inadequate or insufficient eyelash growth.
Many women have brittle, short or thin lashes. While some women are born with this condition, it can also be caused by stress, hormonal changes, or the overuse of mascara. Using LATISSE™ daily allows your lashes to grow without shedding or breaking as they normally would. Therefore, lashes will continue to grow longer until they have reached the desired length and thickness of your choosing. Maintaining the results is as simple as using the product once or twice a week.
While LATISSE™ is a new treatment in eyelash growth, it was developed through years of research by the pharmaceutical company Allergan, the makers of Botox and Juvèderm. It is FDA approved to stimulate eyelashes to grow longer and thicker with noticeable results in most patients in only 4 weeks.
The New Year often serves as a trigger to combat weight loss. At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, Board Certified Plastic Surgeons Dr. Ben Kirbo and Dr. Laurence Rosenberg are seeing an influx of patients who have experienced dramatic weight loss. If you have undergone substantial weight loss, or are considering weight loss surgery options, it may be beneficial to also consult with your plastic surgeon.
Bariatric Surgery and Gastric Bypass Surgery have grown significantly in popularity and can result in massive weight loss in a short time. Since skin loses elasticity with age, many individuals are left with a great deal of extra skin. Excess skin can interfere with clothing and activity or can even lead to skin irritation or breakdown.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the most common procedures for contouring the body after losing a large amount of weight are: a thigh lift, an upper arm lift, a breast lift and a lower body lift. Body contouring plastic surgery can help decrease the extra skin and give an individual a new image after weight loss.
back to topSkin Care To Reduce the Signs Of Aging
As menopause approaches and during menopause substantial changes in the progesterone and estrogen levels of your body can cause many changes in your skin. As the hormone levels fluctuate, you will notice a number of skin changes.
The lack of estrogen and diminishing collagen levels affect everyone differently. Some women experience severe dehydration, wrinkles, uneven pigment, loss of elasticity, thinning skin, adult acne and even unwanted facial hair growth. Others have fewer changes as these effects vary greatly from person to person. Collagen is the key ingredient for a youthful radiance of the skin.
Since our skin is a reflection of what we eat and our daily lifestyle, it's important to maintain an anti aging skin regimen especially since we lose one percent of our collagen each year after we turn 30 years of age. Collagen is a protein that our body produces that provides firmness and strength to our skin. As collagen degrades, wrinkles appear.
Using antioxidants and retinoids can help prevent premature skin aging. Retinoids also can decrease acne and oiliness, reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and age spots.
Vitamin A (retinoid) is an ingredient that is recognized by the FDA to increase collagen production. Collagen is what gives us young, radiant skin. Every good anti-aging skin care system includes products containing Vitamin A because of its significant contribution to increasing collagen production and repairing sun damaged skin.
It is important to note that the effectiveness of products available through your physician's office is far superior to those available over-the-counter. The active ingredients in over-the-counter products are most often negligible.
A qualified aesthetician can analyze the specific needs of each individual patient.
It is critical to select an aesthetician with a sound fundamental knowledge of the ingredients contained in skin care products and the effects of those ingredients.
In addition to Vitamin A, there are several other antioxidants that are proving to be very valuable with aging skin. Peptide and Growth Factor serums are the latest in skin care science. These serums are highly respected for their ability to penetrate the skin and increase collagen production and prevent free radical damage.
back to topWhat to Expect from Your Consultation Appointment?
You may be considering a cosmetic or reconstructive procedure and it's likely that you have lots of questions. We expect this, which is why at Southeastern Plastic Surgery, consultation appointments are designed to provide all the time you need to make a good decision.
What should you expect to accomplish at a consultation?
• Your physician should ask about your thoughts to the recommended treatment and offer alternatives, where appropriate.
• Your doctor and his or her staff should welcome questions about your procedure, his or her professional qualifications, experience, costs and payment policies.
• You should understand clearly the risks of surgery and possible outcomes.
• It's important that the final decision is left to you.
What questions should you ask when selecting a plastic surgeon?
• Ask if your physician is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Remember that all ASPS members are board certified in plastic surgery, and they only perform surgery in accredited facilities.
• Make sure your physician is board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Other questions to consider:
• Am I a good candidate for the procedure?
• What will be expected of me to get optimal results?
• How long of a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?
• Will I need to take time off work? If so, how long?
The staff at Southeastern Plastic Surgery welcomes your consultation appointment and looks forward to answering your questions.
back to topNow is the time to find a permanent solution
to hair loss.
Both men and women can experience hair loss. Today two out of every three men, and one in five women, suffer some degree of hair loss.
Interest in hair replacement typically brought on by aging, change in hormones, illness or a family history of baldness has significantly increased during the past 10 years. The main cause of a diminishing hair line for men is heredity. In women, hormonal changes such as menopause may cause thinning and hair loss. As a rule, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become.
Southeastern Plastic Surgery offers a treatment option to hair loss that is unique in the Tallahassee market. Dr. Laurence Rosenberg surgically transplants hair follicles in a simple outpatient appointment.
Donor areas in men, such as an area in the back and the side of the head, allow for Dr. Rosenberg to remove hair from the donor site and transplant them one at a time to balding areas. The fine art of creating a brand new hairline can complement the individual's facial features and allows for a completed natural look and a restored hairline.
The technique for men and women is virtually the same although the donor areas may be different. Dr. Rosenberg welcomes consultation appointments.
back to topNext Generation Of Laser Technology Available Just In Time For Warm Weather
Southeastern Plastic Surgery Offers Latest Treatment Option
A new generation of laser technology is available at Southeastern Plastic Surgery, in Tallahassee, offering a less invasive and more cost efficient treatment for skin rejuvenation, permanent hair reduction and removal of vascular lesions, as well as facial veins.
Photofacial technology, which uses lasers and pulsed light to remove skin imperfections, has advanced significantly in recent years. The new StarLux500™ uses pulsed light to treat sunspots or age spots and vascular lesions (the superficial blue, red or purple veins under the skin’s surface). Some common types include rosacea and spider veins (the tiny vessels that appear near the surface of the face).
“It is important to provide to our clients the most effective and least invasive technology available,” said Dr. Laurence Z. Rosenberg, board-certified plastic surgeon. “This newest pulsed light and laser option uses new technology that is clinically proven to deliver results as good as, or better than single application “gold standard” lasers with the highest power available. For our patients, this means desired results can be achieved with fewer visits.”
The technology also works well for hair removal. “Traditional waxing and threading treatments, which essentially rip the hair from the skin, can be very painful,” said Dr. Ben J. Kirbo, board-certified plastic surgeon. “The new pulsed light treatments can be significantly more comfortable. In addition, since the pulses of light penetrate the skin, you do not need to let your hair grow out before you are treated. With pulsed light treatments, you can remain virtually hair-free all the time.”
Most areas can be treated including underarms, legs, back, bikini, upper lip, chin, and chest. Treatment typically lasts less than 30 minutes and can fit even the busiest person’s schedule.
Southeastern Plastic Surgery surgeons, Ben J. Kirbo, M.D. and Laurence Z. Rosenberg, M.D., provide the newest, most technologically advanced cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. In addition, the SPA at Southeastern Plastic Surgery provides a full line of skin care services.

“When it comes to breast augmentation or breast reconstruction, information is power because knowing all your options will help you make the very best decisions,” said Laurence Rosenberg, MD. “The quality of the breast implant that goes into your body is as important as the skill of the surgeon who puts it there.”
Ben. J. Kirbo, MD, says that safety is a critical factor with any surgery and implants have always received attention in the media. Southeastern Plastic Surgery (SPS) offers patients the FDA-approved MemoryGel™ breast implants, which are among the best implants available. back to topFraxel® Laser Treatments Now Available In
Northwest Florida And South Georgia
Southeastern Plastic Surgery First to Offer New Technology
Southeastern Plastic Surgery in Tallahassee is the first and exclusive provider of the newest wave of technology in the Florida panhandle. This new aesthetic solution to turn back the clock of time for aging and sun-damaged skin is the newest generation of non-invasive laser technology called Fraxel Laser Treatment. The Fraxel Laser resurfaces photodamaged skin, treats wrinkles around the eyes, and improves pigmented lesions such as melasma, age spots and sun spots on the face, chest and hands.
“The Fraxel Laser is what everyone has been waiting for,” said Dr. Kirbo. “Patients will now have the benefits of traditional skin resurfacing without significant downtime and risks. We now have an excellent option to treat facial scarring. This has been a major innovation for adult patients who want to treat scars related to adolescent acne.”
The Fraxel Laser was specially designed to create thousands of microscopic thermal spots that form vertical columns of treated skin tissue that are separated and surrounded by unaffected, healthy skin. This innovative approach allows the caregiver to treat only a small fraction of skin at a time so it heals much faster than if the entire area were treated at once. More importantly, and in contrast to other laser/light therapies, the new laser creates new epidermal skin in the treatment areas within 24 hours.
Scars are depressions or indentations that occur from the skin’s natural healing process following surgery or a medical condition, such as acne. Like photodamaged skin, scars contain reduced amounts of collagen, have irregularly structured dermal fibers and usually lack elasticity. There are several types of scars caused by acne including deep “ice-pick” scars that are the hallmark of acne scarring; “box car” scars that usually occur on the cheek or forehead and resemble chickenpox marks; and “rolling” scars that give the skin a wavy appearance.
“A successful treatment outcome requires both the removal of damaged epidermal or surface tissue and the stimulation of collagen remodeling in the dermal component of acne, stretch marks, and surgical scars in order to improve collagen fiber reorganization, surface texture and skin tone,” said Dr. Laurence Rosenberg.
“Fraxel Laser Treatment represents new-generation laser resurfacing with predictable results. It rebuilds damaged skin like digital modification – pixel by pixel, spot by spot, said Dr. Kirbo. “Think of your skin as a family portrait or a digital photograph in need of high-quality restoration or touch-up. A painting delicately restores one small area at a time, or a photo is digitally altered, pixel by pixel. That’s the scientific principle behind Fraxel Laser Treatment.”
The advantage of the Fraxel laser is its unrivaled ability to repair a range of facial scars and promote collagen growth in patients of all skin types.
Safe and effective, the Fraxel laser is cleared by the FDA and has undergone extensive testing in the lab and out in the field. An effective treatment generally requires three to five treatment sessions about two to four weeks apart.
Other advantages to the Fraxel Laser include:
- No scalpel, no stitches, no needles
- No general anesthesia as treatments only require a topical anesthetic
- Convenience as the procedure only takes about 30 minutes.
- High safety and proven effectiveness on neck, chest and hands
- Minimal risk of complications or adverse events
- Natural, youthful-looking results.
“We’ve been receiving calls from patients looking for this new technology in recent weeks following national news stories, and we’re pleased to be able to offer it to Northwest Florida and Southwest Georgia,” said Drs. Kirbo and Rosenberg.
Visit www.fraxel.com for more information and before and after photos.
back to topRestoring lost hair with micro-transplantation
Hair transplantation is the advanced surgical technique which transfers hair from the permanent hair bearing scalp to areas that are bald.
Modern hair restoration techniques transfer thousands of individual follicular units, each containing one to four hairs. This results in a natural looking, permanent solution to hair loss.
Micro-hair transplantation does not result in an artificial or “plug” like appearance that the older techniques often created.
Up to 3,500 grafts, over 5,000 hairs can be transplanted per session. Most patients only need one or two sessions, depending on the extent of their hair loss.
The procedure is done under local anesthesia with light sedation. Patients can relax, watch a movie or sleep.
There is minimal down-time, and, often no time away from work is required.
back to topSkin Cancer Rates Continue to Increase Especially
Among The Young
It’s hard to avoid the Florida sunshine, but a local plastic surgeon warns everyone to limit exposure to the sun and to be certain that skin is protected with a sunscreen of sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater.
Ben. J. Kirbo, MD, says that the practice is seeing more and more cases of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of all cancer types, and the number of skin cancers has been rising steadily for the past 30 years. He said that the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer has been increasing especially among young women.
“Many skin cancers are the result of too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays or tanning beds,” said Laurence Rosenberg, MD. “When people take the necessary precautions, many skin cancers can be avoided.”
Skin care is a necessity and begins with thoughtful approaches to exposure to the harmful effects of the sun. In addition to using an SPF, consideration should be given to the length of sun exposure and the wear of protective sun glasses and clothing, such as a hat.
Southeastern Plastic Surgery recognizes that many individuals, male and female, are seeking comprehensive skin care services not only for sun protection but for year around healthy skin care. Skin care services are offered at The SPA at Southeastern Plastic Surgery which has its own separate waiting area, giving individuals an easy private space for services or products. Highly trained, licensed estheticians offer services that give spa luxury and comfort with state-of-the-art medical equipment
