Skin Cancer Rates Continue to Increase Especially Among the Young

Published on April 15, 2008

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, — It’s hard to avoid the Florida sunshine, but a local plastic surgeon warns everyone to limit exposure to the sun and to be certain that skin is protected with a sunscreen of sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater.

Ben. J. Kirbo, MD, Tallahassee board-certified plastic surgeon, says that his practice is seeing more and more cases of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of all cancer types, and the number of skin cancers has been rising steadily for the past 30 years. He said that the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer has been increasing especially among young women.

“Many skin cancers are the result of too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays or tanning beds,” said Ben J. Kirbo, MD. “When people take the necessary precautions, many skin cancers can be avoided.”

Skin care is a necessity and begins with thoughtful approaches to exposure to the harmful effects of the sun. In addition to using an SPF, consideration should be given to the length of sun exposure and the wear of protective sun glasses and clothing, such as a hat.
“At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, we recognized that many individuals are seeking comprehensive skin care services not only for sun protection but for year around healthy skin care. For the past five years, Southeastern Plastic Surgery has offered skin restoration treatments at its medical office. While these services have always been available to non-patient consumers, the offering was limited to medical office visits.

The SPA at Southeastern Plastic Surgery’s concept is to make medical-grade services convenient and to enhance the experience with the serenity of a spa atmosphere ,” said Kirbo.

The SPA offers microdermabrasion, the Obagi Skin Health System, laser hair removal, Botox, and their newest addition: the RejuveLux® Photofacial technology which combines pulsed light optical energy and radio-frequency electrical energy to perform a variety of tasks from permanent hair removal of all skin and hair types=2 0to photorejuvenation which removes both red and brown pigmentations (freckles, rosacea, broken capillaries, age spots), fine lines and wrinkles and textural irregularities from acne scarring.
