Hair Restoration

Hair restoration at our Tallahassee, FL practice is an advanced surgical technique that transfers hair from the permanent hair-bearing scalp to areas that are bald or severely thinning, resulting in a natural-looking, long-lasting solution to hair loss.

Hair loss affects both men and women differently. In men, “male pattern baldness” is caused by a hereditary condition called androgenic alopecia. For women, hair loss often appears as hair thinning hair on the top and sides of the hair. Hair loss in women can be caused by generic conditions or external conditions. We treat each individual uniquely, assessing their hair restoration needs then creating an individualized treatment plan to suit their goals.

We pride ourselves on offering both micro-follicular hair transplantation and follicular unit extraction. Utilizing both techniques gives our board-certified plastic surgeons the flexibility to perform any size hair restoration.

How Does Each Technique Work?

Micro-Follicular Hair Transplantation

Micro-follicular hair transplantation is achieved by harvesting sections of hair-bearing scalp then dividing the skin into grafts that are transplanted to areas of the scalp without hair.

Micro-follicular hair transplantation is also called a standard strip procedure. It involves up to 3,500 grafts, allowing more than 5,000 hairs to be transplanted per session.

This technique results in a natural-looking result but there is often some visible scarring along the back of the head where the grafts are taken. This can be covered by hair allowing hair to grow slightly longer.

Follicular Unit Extraction

The most advanced technique for hair transplantation is using follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUE is a hair transplant technique in which individual follicular units are extracted from a patient’s balding-resistant donor areas such as the back of the head. These small hair follicular unit grafts are then transplanted into a patient’s balding or thinning areas, creating a natural-looking result. This technique results in the best possible outcome for hair transplantation by minimizing the amount of handling of the follicles and avoids a long scar.

Our technicians use an FUE device to harvest the hair follicles and transplant them to the areas where hair is needed most, which allows for large areas of hair to be transplanted with minimal handling of the follicles. This results in greater survival rates of the hair follicles and a better result.

FUE hair transplant procedures require little downtime, no numbness at the donation site, no stitches or staples, and minimal scarring.

Treating Hair Loss in Men

For men experiencing hair loss, there are several treatment options to help slow or restore the loss of hair. For best results, seeking treatment early will enable you to have the most options for hair restoration, but we offer treatment for men at many stages in the hair loss process.

We use advanced techniques to transplant hair from areas that are resistant to hair loss to areas where hair has been lost. Our technicians, under the supervision of our board-certified plastic surgeons, perform both micro-follicular hair transplantation and follicular unit extraction (FUE) to restore lost hair for men. The process is completed in a few hours, and most patients only require 1 or 2 sessions to achieve their desired results.

Depending on the severity of the hair loss, our team will create a treatment plan designed to restore your hair and achieve the most natural-looking results possible.

Treating Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss in women often requires a more complicated treatment process because the hair loss does not specific patterns. Hair is often lost from the sides and top of the scalp, leaving hair appearing sparse with the scalp visible.

Women may experience hair loss because of a genetic predisposition or hormone changes, but there are other factors, such as wearing hair in extensions, braids or using chemical relaxers, which are common for African-American patients, that can cause hair loss as well.

No matter the cause of your hair loss, we are able to provide treatment for hair loss in women using both the micro-follicular hair transplant procedure or FUE hair transplants to help restore fullness to your hair and achieve natural-looking results.

Since hair loss in women is a more complex problem, it requires a more complex solution, so additional sessions may be required to achieve the desired effects. We will meet with you to assess your unique needs and determine a treatment plan that suits your goals and budget.
