Skin Cancer Rates Continue to Increase Especially Among the Young

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, — It’s hard to avoid the Florida sunshine, but a local plastic surgeon warns everyone to limit exposure to the sun and to be certain that skin is protected with a sunscreen of sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater.

Ben. J. Kirbo, MD, Tallahassee, FL board-certified plastic surgeon, says that his practice is seeing more and more cases of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of all cancer types, and the number of skin cancers has been rising steadily for the past 30 years. He said that the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer has been increasing especially among young women.

“Many skin cancers are the result of too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays or tanning beds,” said Ben J. Kirbo, MD. “When people take the necessary precautions, many skin cancers can be avoided.”

Skin care is a necessity and begins with thoughtful approaches to exposure to the harmful effects of the sun. In addition to using an SPF, consideration should be given to the length of sun exposure and the wear of protective sun glasses and clothing, such as a hat.
