Breast Reduction

Breast reduction…it can truly change your life.

Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) helps women with overly large breasts feel more comfortable and confident by removing excess breast tissue and skin. At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons perform breast reduction in Tallahassee, FL, to create smaller, lighter, and more proportionate breasts for women from Destin, Valdosta, Dothan, and other nearby cities.

What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction removes breast fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The nipple is also repositioned or lifted. A breast lift is part of a breast reduction.

The resulting breasts will be smaller, lighter and lifted. This reduction surgery can alleviate the health problems associated with large breasts and improve a woman’s confidence in her appearance. Breast reduction surgery is usually covered by insurance.

Breast reduction surgery or reduction mammoplasty dramatically improves our patients’ quality of life, offering relief from discomfort and pain. Women experiencing health problems and/or extreme self-consciousness associated with large, heavy breasts will benefit from breast reduction surgery.

Who Is a Candidate?

Most reduction candidates have overly large breasts, which can cause health and even emotional problems. This frequently leads to physical pain and discomfort.

Medical problems that may be associated with large breasts include:

  • Back and neck pain caused by the excessive weight of their breasts
  • Skin irritation and rashes
  • Bra strap indentations
  • Poor posture
  • Interference with normal daily activities and exercise

The ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery is physically healthy and does not smoke

What Happens During a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery is most often an outpatient procedure, and the results will be long-lasting. It is done under general anesthesia and typically takes two to three hours. When the surgery is completed, dressing or bandages will be applied to the incisions. A drainage tube is not used after modern breast reduction surgery.

Breast Reduction With Lift

Even though breast reduction and breast lift surgery are distinct procedures, they have much in common. In fact, most breast reduction surgeries include a lift. It is not unusual for women to encounter both excess breast tissue and sagging; combining a breast reduction and a lift addresses both concerns and enhances the results.

What Is Breast Reduction Recovery Like?

Most patients return to work and non-strenuous activities 1 week after breast reduction surgery. Patients will need to limit strenuous upper body activity and wear a supportive sports bra for about 6 weeks after surgery, after which they can talk to their surgeon about resuming exercise and going braless.

Scars are typically raised and more noticeable at first, often appearing pink, red, or darker than the surrounding skin. Over time, they gradually flatten and fade, becoming lighter and less noticeable over the course of about a year.

Many patients say that breast reduction alleviates their chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain and leads to improved confidence in their body image.

Breast Reduction FAQ

How many cup sizes can be removed with a breast reduction?

In general, most breast reductions remove one to two cup sizes. The amount of tissue removed during breast reduction depends on many factors, including the amount of excess breast tissue present. Your surgeon will work to achieve your goals while leaving enough breast tissue in place to support blood flow to the nipple, remaining breast tissue, and skin.

What size breasts qualify for reduction?

There isn’t a specific breast size that makes you a good candidate for reduction. If the size of your breasts causes physical pain or makes you self-conscious, you can benefit from breast reduction surgery.

What disqualifies you from a breast reduction?

If you’re planning to have children or are in the midst of losing weight, we recommend postponing breast reduction surgery. It’s also not a good idea to undergo cosmetic surgery if you’re a smoker who isn’t able to quit for several weeks before and after the surgery; smoking elevates your risk of complications.

Do you remove nipples during breast reduction surgery?

Surgeons do not remove nipples during most breast reduction procedures. They will reposition them to ensure they appear natural. If necessary, the surgeon may reduce the size of the areolae by removing skin around the perimeter.

Can a breast reduction correct uneven breasts?

Yes, our surgeons can correct breast asymmetry by removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin from the larger breast to bring it into better proportion with the smaller one.

How painful is breast reduction surgery?

Pain tolerance varies from person to person. However, most patients find that over-the-counter pain relievers are enough to keep them comfortable within a few days after surgery.

Can your breasts get bigger after a reduction?

Technically, weight gain, hormonal fluctuations, and some medications can occasionally cause breasts to get bigger after a reduction. However, this breast regrowth is uncommon.

To learn more about breast reduction and find out if you’re a good candidate, please request your consultation with one of our board-certified physicians or call (850) 219-2000 for an appointment.
