Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry is a very common aesthetic concern. Many, if not most, of the women we perform breast surgery for are looking to correct asymmetry to some degree. Typically caused by genetics, this issue can lead to insecurity and difficulty finding clothing that fits properly. Our board-certified plastic surgeons perform a custom combination of breast reduction, breast lift, and breast augmentation at our Tallahassee plastic surgery practice to create more symmetrical breasts. Women visit us from as far as Destin, FL; Valdosta, GA; and Dothan, AL, for this cosmetic surgery.

Treating breast asymmetry requires a skillful and artistic surgical approach. Even a small amount of asymmetry in the breasts can make creating a symmetrical result much more challenging. For this reason, breast surgery results for women with asymmetrical breasts often aren’t quite as symmetrical as those of women who had even breasts to begin with. It’s important to keep this in mind as you look through breast surgery “after” photos.

What Is the Best Surgical Treatment for Breast Asymmetry?

There are multiple options for surgically treating breast asymmetry, typically involving breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction.

Breast Lift

A breast lift can reposition and reshape the breasts to make them aligned and balanced. The surgery is a strong option when one breast has a greater degree of sagging than the other.

Breast Reduction

If there is a significant volume difference and you prefer the size of the smaller breast, this surgery can remove volume in one or both breasts for a more symmetrical appearance.

Breast Augmentation

If you prefer the size of the larger breast or would like to increase the size of both, breast augmentation with implants may be the best approach.

How Does Breast Augmentation Treat Asymmetry?

Breast augmentation can treat asymmetry through either the placement of an implant only in the smaller breast or the use of differently sized implants in each breast to create balanced volume and increase the size of both.

  • Single implant: If your breasts are noticeably asymmetrical but you are happy with the size of the larger breast, adding a single implant to the smaller breast can balance the size.
  • Differently sized implants: If you would like to enlarge both breasts, we can use differently sized implants to account for the size difference and make sure the result is as symmetrical as possible.

Why Choose Breast Augmentation for Asymmetry?

There is a common misconception that a breast lift or reduction is the only way to create symmetrical breasts, either by removing or reshaping existing tissue. However, breast augmentation can create attractive results with less scarring than a lift or reduction, especially for women with subtle asymmetry.

What Are the Benefits of Combining a Breast Lift With Implants?

Adding an implant and lifting the breasts allows for adjustments both to size and shape. We can restore one or both breasts to a more youthful shape and position while using implants to even out volume and increase the size of both breasts if desired.
